Plumbing Priorities Before You Leave for Holiday

Plumbing Priorities Before You Leave for Holiday

  • The holiday season is finally in full swing and if you’re like many, that also means vacation time for you. Whether you’re headed up north or somewhere else to take a breather from real life, it would be wise to complete some plumbing checks before you head out. As you know, there is nothing worse than returning home with a plumbing disaster. So, check out these few simple steps you can take to prep your plumbing before a long getaway.

  • Plumbing priorities before you leave for holiday

Shut off your water supply – Shut off the main water valve and drain the remaining water out. In that case, you can do away with the possibility of your pipe getting broken because of leaking supply lines and dripping water heaters. Rather than leave it to the last minute before you head off, give your shut off valve just one good clockwise turn and you’re good to go. This will also give you peace of mind knowing you’re not coming home with foul smells or bacteria in the pipes. If you have another water system on a separate meter, like a sprinkler system or pool pump, it would be impractical to turn off the entire supply. So just leave that line open and turn off the shut off valve that won’t be needed when you’re away.

  • If you plan to be away for a long time, it will also help to invite a trusted friend to pay your home a visit once a month to test your plumbing and run the water to keep your plumbing in good condition. It will also make the house appear like people are there, which will discourage thieves from entering your home and stealing things.
  •

Perform a sump pump test – You can never tell what mother nature will bring while you’re away. So in case, it may rain cats and dogs while you’re out, you’re sure your sump pump is in good condition to handle excess water in your basement. To run a test on your sump pump, pour approximately 20 liters of water into the sump pit, make sure it turns on and pumps the water away.

  • The easiest way to make sure the pump will work is to check if the pump cord is  plugged into the outlet, easy. As soon as the pump vibrates and you hear a humming sound when turning on the pump, the pump works. It is also ideal to have a battery backup pump in case of a power outage. Don’t forget to include checking the drain pipes for any debris on your test. Debris can clog the drain pipe and prevent water from being pumped efficiently.
  •

Turn down your water heater temperature – For the sake of saving on utility bills, it would be wise to turn off your heater when you’re away, but it wouldn’t hurt to leave it on either. If you turn off your water heater, you might run into issues with turning it back on. Plus it would take a lot of energy to reheat your water. Won’t look good on your next electric bill. Instead, set your water heater to VAC mode. Newer models have this option or an option to set the temperature to 122 fahrenheit. You can also turn it down to the lowest setting. Most households usually only require 120 fahrenheit. This will help you save energy without compromising your heater from mineral buildup and corrosion.

  •

Check your yard – Who doesn’t love big shady yards? This may be the least of the things you want to do, but checking your yard for possible root intrusions, especially where your pipe runs will save you big time from repair where you would need to dig. Trees are a danger for pipelines the same way icebergs are dangerous to ships. It’s not what you see is the problem, but what lies underneath. Whether you like it or not, tree roots have a knack at squeezing through even the tiniest gaps and cracks in pipes to seek for moisture and nutrients. Once they’re inside the pipe, they will grow rapidly and cause problems that will lead to severe water damage.

  • The easiest way to tell that your roots are growing inside your pipes is if there are soft sinkholes appearing in your yard, pooling water that’s been there for days, or your lawn has unexpected green patches. But if you think it’s not the perfect time for you to do this for now, as you’re itching to go, you can call on our plumbers to solve tree root infiltration right away.
  •

Check for leaks – The worst thing that can happen when you’re away is not knowing you have a leaking pipe. Leaks that go undetected come with safety and property risks. One thing that many people fail to realize when it comes to leaky pipes is that they could be leaking close to electrical systems and the chance that your home’s water supply can become contaminated. Leaks encourage mould and mildew growth and when it is entirely hidden can cause structural and foundational damage to your homes. They grow in just about any damp area, or where leaks commonly occur. So if you see visible mould and mildew growing, act right away. The longer areas of your home stay wet, the more likely you’ll have permanent damage. Don’t put it off till you’re back. We’re only a call away to fix any leak problems in your home.

  •

Have your damaged pipes relined – Let’s keep it simple, nothing ruins a house more than water and fire, so if you’re concerned you have a damaged pipe, call the sewer pipe relining professionals to fix that before you go. Relining pipes only takes a day’s work to finish, so it wouldn’t hurt your schedule so much to wait. If you’re like us, you’d probably know the hassle and the cost to come home with water all over your home. So if you want to have a stress-free come back, get a plumber to track down leaks and other damages for you.

  • Sewer pipe relining Sydney professionals, like ourselves, can perform a CCTV drain or sewer inspection to get a closer look inside your pipes for fractures and obstructions. It will give us an idea how we should go about fixing the problem. To not leave you in the dark of what’s going on down the line, we can also provide you with video footage of the inspection.
  •
  • If budget is a concern for hesitating to go for drain relining or sewer relining, think about this. Drain relining cost is cheaper when you do it now than later. Keep in mind that the later you fix a problem, the more likely you’ll have to pay more. That means, you’re coming back with another expenses in front of you. Not to mention the hassle to get your place dried up and cleaned.

What’s in it for you to hire sewer relining contractors before leaving for holiday?

  •
  • • You will enjoy your holiday without expecting bad news about a plumbing trouble
