The 5 Nasty Results of a Bad Sewer Line

The 5 Nasty Results of a Bad Sewer Line

  • Perhaps the most frustrating part of a plumbing problem is discovering that aside from dealing with the repair, you also have to deal with other things that come along with it. That’s why making sure your pipes at home are always in the best condition possible at all times is the most essential step to do. Ever wonder why? Let us walk you through some of the nasty results of a poor-conditioned sewer line and what you can do to eliminate them.

The 5 nasty results of a bad sewer line

1. Rodents infestation

  • Let’s start with this nasty creature that can creep in from your sewer leaks and into your homes. Rodents thrive in underground passageways because the environment provides them with their most essential needs: shelter and food. If you have ever dealt with an infestation of rodents, household pests and insects previously, you know how tricky it can be to get rid of them, not to mention the damage they can cause.
  •
  • When your sewer has leaks, rodents can sneak through it in search of more food. Rodents like rats are naturally monsters in the deep – they can swim for up to three days, and they will eat just about anything that gets in their way. While rats need a larger opening to enter your home, mice can squeeze through unsealed drainage pipes. You may particularly notice them scurrying around if you’ve been in your house for a while. While calling a pest exterminator is a good idea, this will only prove useless unless you fix the holes and leaks in your sewer line. A sewer leak is a problem that cannot take care of itself. If you leave it uncorrected, you will not only suffer from the rodents existence but as well as damages caused by leakages.

2. Other sewer bugs

  • Aside from rodents, other pests can also thrive inside the sewer. They’re especially attracted to the smell of decayed elements; As food waste gets flushed down drains, swarms of bacteria and fungus begin to thrive on the drain surfaces. Yep, you heard it right. Most sewer bugs thrive in damp environments, they feed on organic matter like hair and food waste, and they lay their eggs in the slimy biofilm produced by these bacteria and gunks that accumulate throughout your plumbing–YUCK! Believe it or not, aside from your sewer, the P-trap in your drains also provides a perfect spot for a variety of bugs to live, eat, and reproduce. When the drain lacks a sufficient amount of water to flush the waste away, it will remain and decay in the P-trap, creating an ideal spot for flies. While they may be less visible, they can be more dangerous to health and your pipes.
  •
  • It is a false impression that bugs enter the drain from the outside. Though it isn’t impossible, it is not the way bugs enter your drain pipe. These bugs are either already lurking and breeding in your home. If you have tiny cracks in your exterior pipes, those cracks will likely give these bugs a point of entry. Whichever way they made their way into your sewer, it’s never long before they’re in your home and find a cozy spot to thrive when you don’t take a step to seal those cracks.
  •

3. Sewer smell

  • The common reason why you might get a sudden whiff of something unpleasant in your home is a sewer leak or a clogged drainpipe. The unpleasant smell emanating from the bathroom may not come as a surprise, but even so, it’s a good idea to track down the source. When your sewer reeked of rotten egg, it often does not go away on its own but points to a more significant problem that might require the sewer pipe reining professional to look into the matter.
  •
  • The wastewater system supposedly works fairly simply. It relies on good condition pipes, air venting to drain and gravity. But, whenever something disrupts any of these, a drain problem is directly the culprit. Sometimes the issue occurs close to the bathroom, other times, caused by a clogged sewer line or an overflowing septic tank. Sewer smell is not only nasty but also comes with health hazards in your homes.
  •

4. Sewer backup

  • It’s never fun to deal with plumbing problems, more so if it is a home sewage problem like sewage backups; No one is excused on this problem – It can happen to anyone, in any home, and at just about any time. Backed up drains can occur in a single fixture or multiple fixtures when the drain or sewer pipe is severely blocked.
  •
  • Consider yourself lucky if the problem is limited to just a single sink, one tub, or a single toilet that is backing up. Likely the case, a clog in that particular drain is responsible for the problem. If, however, every time you flush the sewage backflows in your entire home, there’s a big chance that a blockage is present in your sewer line. Repairing a sewer problem is no laughing matter, let alone the cleaning you’d have to do to discard all the items that have entered your home.
  •
  • Severe backups not only cause hassle, mess and inconvenience. It will also leave you footing the bill for pipe repair when the blockages have already placed the pipe in a non-functional state.

5. Mould growth

  • Typically, your home’s structure lasts for years if not exposed to water or moisture. When water leaks through cracks and gaps on your pipes, it crawls onto your floors and walls, giving way for water to seep under the tile and wear away walls and ceilings. When this happens, moulds will have an opportunity to grow and slowly make the structure lose its integrity. We’re sure you wouldn’t like seeing moulds on your walls, ceilings or flooring. Let alone the need for you to spend a great amount of money to replace portions of your flooring and walls that got damaged. When mould gets out of control, it can even cause severe damage to your property, so don’t wait to fix a leak.
  •
  • A leakage should never be a big problem if resolved soon. So, if you suspect leaking is taking place in your plumbing, contact the experts right away.

How to Keep these Nasty Things out of your Plumbing?

  • The best thing to do to get rid of these nasty things out of your plumbing is to make all effort not to experience any troubles with plumbing at all. Whether the things lurking in your plumbing are six-legged, four-legged, microscopic or invisible, you don’t deserve to live and deal with them. So, take all steps to make sure your plumbing system is damage-free at all times. But if ever you’ve come face to face with sewer problems now, don’t hold it off too long. You can try some of the things below.
  •

        Cover up pipe openings

  • Often, the first line of defense when it comes to keeping insects and pests out of your plumbing system is to track down where they are getting in, then block off those entry points. If you have had a few uninvited visitors who have seemed to come from your roofs, such as tree frogs or possums, it is very likely an open stack pipe is responsible for the problem. You can purchase a stack pipe cap to cover the top of the pipe. The cap has openings that allow the fumes and gas out, but are small enough for critters to get in.
  •

            Seal up cracks and holes

  • Bare in mind, mice have a knack at getting through a small crack or opening in your pipes. If you see traces of mice around your house, or if you see an actual mouse scurrying around, take a closer look at the pipes that lead to your bathroom or kitchen. Remember, a small crack is enough for a mouse to squeeze in and make your home its cozy place. When you find any cracks and holes, manage to fill those openings with caulk or a plumber’s putty to keep these creatures out.
  •
  •         Keep trees and shrubs around your home well-trimmed

  • Tree branches that hang over your roof are not only a problem when there’s a storm. They can also provide a direct point of access through the roof and the stack pipe for frogs, possums and other pests. Keep tree branches well-trimmed to protect your house not just from storms but as well as these creatures.
  •

        Regularly clean the drain

  • Keeping the drains in your sinks and bathroom clean will protect you from an infestation of drain flies. It is a common misconception that chemical drain cleaner is the best way to keep the drains clean. Harsh elements on chemicals drain cleaners can damage and corrode your pipes. Instead, run warm water down them. It also helps to give your drains and your traps a good scrub with a pipe brush to get rid of debris and gunks.
