Preventing clogs should be at the top of your daily maintenance list, which is one of the number one problems that every home encounters from time to time. Why bother about clogs in your drains anyway? Clogs are not only nuisances, they can start major problems like burst and leaking pipe when it remains unresolved. What makes it worse is that it sometimes just happens out of the blue, without caution or warning at all. They overwhelm your waste pipes and shorten their lifespan. So better yet, make a daily effort to prevent blockages from occurring in the first place. But how can you do so?

      4. Your bathroom and kitchen are two areas in your home that see a lot of use, and they are also the ones that are at higher risk of developing issues. To keep the water moving through the pipes from these two places and out of your home, keep in mind the tips below.

      8. With all the food, scraps, oils, etc. that you toss down the kitchen drain, it wouldn’t take too long until issues start to crop up. This is especially true if you have a garbage disposal, where you’re more inclined to dump larger food scraps down the drain thinking they’ll be ripped up into pieces and will travel down the line breezily. Keep these simple preventative tips in mind to keep a happy drain.

      11. • Wipe the grease and debris off on your kitchenware with a paper towel. Dispose of the paper towel properly. 
      12. • Collect your used cooking oil into a sealable container or jar for reuse, or recycling.

      14. • Give your drain filter a good brush after every kitchenware wash and change them regularly. Toss food scraps that are caught into the waste bin.
      15. • Keep eggshells, dental floss, hair, coffee grounds, and similar items that do not break down, are stringy, and are dense away from your kitchen drains.

      19. Your bathroom is another place in your home where clogs can easily become a problem. To make sure you don’t run into clog trouble and end up with ankle-deep wastewater, do these preventative tips below.

      21. • Don’t use fancy soap bombs that contain particles that are terrible for your bathroom drains like coffee grounds, confetti, glitters, etc.
      22. • Install drain guards that are effective at catching dirt, soap scums, and hair.
      23. • Clean your drain filter regularly, or as soon as you see a buildup of hair and debris.
      24. • Keep a flat plunger insight.
      25. • Brush your hair before showering. This will help prevent loose hair from clogging your shower drain.

      29. In addition to the kitchen and bathroom in your home, you can also take daily preventative maintenance in your toilet. A toilet is meant to last a long time, but even with slight carelessness, it can completely stop working all of a sudden. Proper flushing is the key to a working all-year-round toilet, which means to give your toilet a favor by being responsible for how you use it daily.

      31. • Don’t flush anything that doesn’t break down or dissolve in the toilet. It’s only meant to take wastewater and human waste.
      32. • Don’t overuse toilet paper, limitation is the key. Flush twice when you need to use it. 
      33. • Have a plunger within arm’s reach in cases of minor clogs.
      34. • Educate your children about ‘the what’s not rules’ in the toilet.
      35. • Never use the toilet tank as extra counter space. Avoid placing a bar soap near the toilet or on top of the tank to avoid the soap from falling into the toilet and causing clogs.

2. 1. 1. Checking on your pipes once a week is a great way for homeowners to prevent small problems from becoming huge, costly ones. Take for example a simple clog. Clogs can put an unwanted strain on the pipe and when not detected in time, this problem can escalate to leaking, until the pipe cannot stand the strain and eventually collapse.

      3. • Check your pipes. Look under sinks for signs of moisture, puddles of water, water spots, musty smell and mould growth. 
      4. • Test all sinks and shower drain for signs of slow drainage.
      5. • Take a quick tour around your home and have a close look at exposed pipes and appliances for water leaks and signs of pipe deterioration.
      6. • Clean your washer lint traps.
      7. • Put a few drops of dishwashing soap in your sink followed by boiling water. This will help loosen up and clear away buildup caused by grease.
      8. Check the flushing pressure of your toilet. Poor pressure will leave residues behind and will cause constant clogs.
