Keeping Pest Out of Your Drains

Keeping Pest Out of Your Drains

  • Are bugs bugging you at home? Perhaps the most unsettling part with this sad reality is to know that these bugs don’t just love to wander around your house, they want to stick around as long as they want if you don’t fix issues with your drains. If you’ve dealt with them in the past, you prolly know how a wee bit challenging it can get to make them go away. The good news is, getting rid of them is not as tricky as you think. Let us walk you through some of the ways you can keep these nasty creatures out of your sight!

Why Bugs Thrive in Drains?

  • Naturally, these insects thrive in drain pipes because they have a continuous food, shelter, and water source. Hence, they find all ways possible to squeeze in even through the tiniest gaps and leaks in your drains to have access to these. Every tiny bit of organic matter such as vegetables, fruits, and other food as well as hair and rubbish that hits the drain combined with the water from the spout becomes a staple meal for these obnoxious insects. It gives them the perfect conditions to grow and reproduce, and when they find a perfect time, they will find entry through the damages in your pipe and make your home their comfortable place.

Types of Pests Lurking in your Drain Pipes

  • Cockroaches
  • Cockroaches are perhaps the most common type of drain bug that often thrive in bathroom and kitchen drains. They are especially attracted to this area in your homes because they supply them with a reliable source of both food and water. In many ways, cockroaches can hitchhike, run and crawl into your homes, but most of the time it is the drains that serve as entry points for these bugs. Not only do cockroaches like the food we eat, but they also like concealed and ill-lit places and those with relatively high humidity.
  •
  • Flies (Drain flies and Fruit flies)
  • Drain flies also known as moth flies, breed in septic tanks, drains, sewers, and soil that has become contaminated with sewage. Believe it or not, these insects like the moist and dark condition your home’s drain provides because it gives them just everything they need to survive and multiply. They feed on decomposing particles and love to lay their eggs within the gelatinous slime that builds up along the interior surface of your drains. While these fuzzy winged bugs don’t bite and kill, no one likes to see them flying out of their seemingly clean drains.
  •
  • Another type of flies that likes to lurk in your drains is fruit flies. They are nothing but year-round nuisances that are constantly looking for an opportunity to feed on your overripe and rotten fruits and vegetables. Once they’re in your home, fruit flies will find their way into your drain to lay their eggs and to make certain their young have a stable food source. This red-eye bug that looks very similar to gnats are often also attracted to garbage bins and kitchen drains, or anywhere they might find damp organic matter to devour. You should be able to avoid problems with these creatures when you eliminate the things that attract them.
  •
  • Rats
  • Rats are another type of pest that can creep in from your sewers and into your home, through unsealed drainage pipes. Eliminating rats from your household only takes one call to pests terminator, but this will only prove worthless until leaks and gaps in your drains and sewer line are sealed up. Unfortunately, a sewer leak is a problem that does not only make you suffer from the presence of rats and other insects but as well as damages caused by leakages.

Cleaning Tips to Keep Bugs Away

  • Drains that are poorly conditioned can become the source of annoying pest infestation, especially flies and cockroaches. If you have tiny cracks in your exterior pipes, those cracks will give these bugs a point of entry, and before you know it, they have already found a perfect spot to thrive in your home. Fortunately, if you manage to clean or fix your blocked drain, you can rid your home of this pesky problem. Read on to learn some ways to eliminate these bugs.

  • Follow these simple steps:

  1. 1. Mix your cleaning solution in a bucket. Make sure to follow the directions on the label to achieve a successful result. Remove the drain trap, if applicable, and drop it into the bucket of cleaner.

  2. 2. This step is a bit tricky, so be extra careful to prevent yourself from getting a splash. Using a drain brush and drain cleaner, brush the drain, the u-trap, the funnel of the drain and under the rim.

  3. 3. Clean the drain grate. This will ensure that it is debris-free before you put it back. Again, be very careful not to get a splash on you, then place the drain grate over the drain.

  4. 4. Pour the remaining drain cleaner down the drain, and run about three to five gallons of clear water to flush the debris away.

Permanent Drain Fix with Pipe Relining

  • Most often than not, when bugs and other sewer pests start to become visible in your home, the presence of leaks in your pipe is likely occurring. While drain cleaning may be necessary, most of the time it won’t resolve problems with pipes that are severely damaged. This is because some of these pests tend to be clever enough to detect pesticides and look for ways to avoid them. So regardless of how careful and good you think you are at cleaning your drains yourself, the real magic only happens when you decide to fix blocked drains Sydney professionals carry out a blocked drain repair for you.
