How unclog a toilet without a plunger like a Pro

  1. When it comes to bathroom chores, a clogged toilet is definitely one of those situations that will surely throw a spanner in the works, especially if you’re missing your handy plunger that usually works magic in your toilet! No snake, no DIY toilet plunger & no way to make a homemade plunger at all!

  2. But don’t stress – no need to fork out for a pricey plumber or start pulling your toilet apart. Just grab some rubber gloves, roll up your sleeves, and follow these simple steps to get your toilet back to normal without the hassle, and without any type of plunger at all!

Simple steps to get your toilet back to normal without the hassle

  1. Step 1: Stop Flushing!
  2. If your toilet is blocked, the last thing you want to do is keep flushing, but that is not always the case. It will just all the more cause the water level to rise, and you could end up with a bathroom flood. So, stop and take action straight away.
  3.
  4. Step 2: Gather Your Gear
  5. Before you get started, make sure you’ve got everything you need. Pop on some rubber gloves, put on some old clothes, grab a wet/dry vacuum cleaner, and have a bucket or bowl ready for any mess. Keep a few old towels or newspapers within reach for any leaks, too. Using a vacuum cleaner may have never crossed your mind but it is a surprisingly effective way to suck debris and clog out of the pipe.
  6.
  7. Step 3: Prevent Overflow
  8. Locate the flapper in the toilet bowl and quickly close it. This will prevent any more water from entering the bowl. If you notice the water is rising too fast, remove the tank lid and pull the float to stop the flow. You can also directly locate the water shutoff valve and close it. It is usually found on the wall or floor near the toilet. It’s connected to the water supply line, which runs from the valve to the toilet tank.
  9.
  10. Step 4: Get your wet/dry vacuum ready
  11. Remove the filter from your wet/dry vacuum (you don’t need it this time as it will only get wet and need to be replaced if you use it). Don’t use a regular vacuum cleaner used for general cleaning jobs around your home, it is not simply made for this type of work.
  12.
  13. Step 5: Let’s get the ball rolling
  14. Plug in your wet/dry vacuum and start by sucking up all the water from the toilet bowl. Once the bowl is emptied, place the vacuum hose directly into the toilet drain – don’t use any attachments, just the main tube. For a better seal, you can wrap a towel around the tube where it meets the drain. Press the hose in as firmly as you can and adjust the towel as needed. Now, turn on the vacuum and let it work its magic. Partial clogs and debris should come out after about 10 seconds.
  15.
  16. If the blockage is a solid object, like a kid’s toy or something else lodged in there, you might be able to reach in with a gloved hand and remove it. If that doesn’t do the trick, go ahead and try these 2 additional ways for you!

Other ways to clear toilet clogs without a plunger

  • Hook and Coat hanger – Simple enough, but surprisingly hook and coat hanger are effective for blockages that are within reach. Wrap the hook with a cloth and make sure it’s tight enough. Insert the hook into the toilet and push through or pull out the clog. If you don’t have a hook, you can also use a conventional coat hanger and straighten it out as best as you can. Just like the hook, make sure it has cloth attached to the end to make sure you’re not scratching or damaging your toilet. Bend over to create a small hook and start fishing for clogs.
  •
  • Chemical drain cleaner – If you don’t have one handy, swing by at your local store for chemical drain cleaners. To make the magic work with this, you have to precisely follow the instructions on the packaging, don’t use too much. Use gloves and goggles if you’re comfortable to try this as it contains harsh components that can be risky. This is by far the quickest solution, but this should only be used periodically and lightly as they can damage your pipes in the long run.
